The 22-bed Lund Family Pediatric and Adolescent Unit, named after the Lund family who generously donated $2.5 million for the Mercy Gilbert Medical Center Tower B expansion, opened on February 4, 2008, providing health care services to children ages 17 and younger in the East Valley.

We recognize that parents know their child’s emotional needs, habits and patterns. For this reason, we encourage parents to assist our team every step of the way in providing efficient, high quality, radical loving care for each child. To accomplish this, the unit includes family support elements such as space and accommodations so parents can stay overnight with their child and offers areas for hygiene, personal belongings and access to phones.

  • The pediatric unit is licensed as a dedicated unit by the Arizona Department of Health Services for pediatric and adolescent patients and follows the 2006 American Institute of Architects guidelines.
  • Mercy Gilbert Medical Center’s Emergency Department has expanded to include dedicated pediatric beds to care for our younger patients. The Emergency Department is staffed by physicians and nurses with advanced training and certification in pediatric emergency medicine. Three recovery rooms within the Operating Room have also been decorated with our pediatric patients in mind.
  • Children’s author Jillian Lund, artist and niece of the Lund family, painted murals that are displayed along the walls. Patients and visitors can read three of her books as they walk through the unit. Frank, a coyote who is the main character in her books, has been named the mascot of the unit.

The Lund Family Pediatric and Adolescent Unit has successfully created an environment where kids can be kids, even when they are in the hospital.

  • The KidsZone is a playroom filled with movies, toys, books, and arts and crafts activities geared toward children of all ages.
  • The Chill Room designed just for teens so they can relax and sit on a couch, listen to music, play video games or use a computer.
  • The Kids Korner Grocery and Café will be open around the clock so children can eat whenever they are hungry and can be directly involved with their food preparation and choices.
  • The Lund Family Pediatric and Adolescent Unit will provide patients and their families with free access to Skylight Children’s Experience Television, including cable television, movies and SeaWorld Adventures. Hospitalized children may opt to explore a story, play games, listen to music or surf the Web. Additionally, this service provides patients with the flexibility to order their own meals, contact their nurse, and to measure their pain, among others.
